When living for others seems to be the answer
What happens when living for others becomes the whole direction?
Once other lives become fully real to us, the opposite of selfishness may appear to be the natural destination.
If living only for ourselves is no longer possible to desire, perhaps we should live entirely for others.
There is something deeply compelling in this answer. It transforms awareness into generosity, loosens the hold of private interest, and makes another person’s happiness part of what directs our lives.
But the same understanding that led us away from selfishness has not yet completed its work.
Your life never left the view
Awareness did not expand by replacing your life with someone else’s.
It expanded by allowing both lives to remain fully present at once.
Your happiness did not become less real when another person’s happiness became visible. Your suffering did not lose its importance when you learned to feel theirs.
If every experience carries the same intrinsic importance, your own cannot become the exception.
Erasing yourself would not complete the expanded view. It would make the view narrower again—only with a different life left outside it.
A direction wider than the self
The answer is not to return to selfishness. Nor is it to make your own life disappear.
Your happiness remains part of what you value—but it no longer marks the boundary of what you can desire.
Other lives can enter that desire without requiring your own to leave it.
The direction revealed by expanded awareness must be wide enough to include every experience that matters, including yours.
If neither living only for ourselves nor living entirely for others can carry this recognition to completion, what direction can?
