When the self is no longer the only measure

What happens when other lives become as real as our own?

As awareness expands, another person’s experience comes into view.

Seeing from within their perspective makes their happiness easier to feel, their suffering harder to dismiss, and their life impossible to treat as merely distant or abstract.

What becomes fully real cannot simply be returned to abstraction.

Closer does not mean more important

We experience our own lives directly.

That explains why our needs first capture our attention, why our pain feels more immediate, and why our happiness is easier to pursue.

But closeness explains attention—not importance.

Once another life is recognized as equally real from within, there is no longer a reason for our own experience to remain the only measure of what matters.

A direction we can no longer desire

Once another life is recognized with the same intrinsic importance as our own, their happiness inevitably becomes something we value and desire from within our own perspective.

From that point on, selfishness can no longer remain a direction we could fully desire.

It would require us to recognize that other lives matter while still wanting to live as though only our own did—and once that recognition has become complete, this is no longer possible.

If living only for ourselves can no longer be the answer, could living entirely for others be the solution?
