Personal unit
A personal unit is every participating individual recognized as a genuine unit in their own right, whether or not they join any group.
Why this word exists
The distinction ordinary language loses.
Why a separate term is needed
Member can imply that the organization is the primary whole and the individual a dependent part. Personal unit makes the individual’s complete standing explicit.
The inaccuracy it prevents
Calling someone merely an individual participant does not protect their continuing identity, authority over their belonging, and independence from any group they join.
